Sixth Ave Dia de los Muertos Band Photos
· Posted Tuesday November 13, 2007 by jamie
Well, it took a bit of time for anything to bubble up, but pictures are starting to emerge of the Sixth Ave Dia de los Muertos procession on November 2nd. The band I pulled together and arranged music for (potentially “to be continued” in the future as the “Horns of Destiny”) turned out great. Things sounded good for a little-rehearsed street band, and we got lots of compliments. And even though (due to equipment limitations) we had to be stationary while playing, and thus couldn’t stay with the main procession, we had our own little crowd of “band groupies” that followed the band around. Ton of fun!
Thanks to (in no particular order) Kevin, Mike, Levin, Dennis, Tim, Isaac, Yuri, Dave, and Kat for playing, the organizers for letting us play, Epworth Lesourd United Methodist for providing a rehearsal location, the Brass Liberation Orchestra for the killer Moliendo Café arrangement, and for all of the various folks that helped out during the procession!
Without further ado, pictures!
Courtesy of Dennis (or rather, Dennis’s wife…):

So, I'm Working on a Little Project...
· Posted Thursday September 20, 2007 by jamie
A while back I came up with a little idea to pull together a marching band for the Sixth Ave Dia de los Muertos procession. Despite the cool puppets and some good guitar music under the tent last year, the procession itself was sort of quiet. So I though maybe it would liven things up to add a little bit of mariachi-ish brass to the mix (emphasis on the “-ish”).
The organizers seemed cool with the idea, so now I’m about 90% done arranging horn parts, I’ve found someone who can help with drum arrangements (hi, Mike!), and essentially committed myself, somehow, to making this thing a “go”. All that remains is finding enough people to actually execute the plan.
In the back of my head, part of me wonders what the hell I’m thinking. I’m sorta worried I’m not going to be able to find enough people, or that it’s going to otherwise end up embarrassing me in one way or another. But I’m trying to soldier through—gotta seize the day, right? And if this is successful, and enough people are interested, I’m thinking it would be fun to keep the group alive as something of a “guerrilla marching band” that shows up at various things around town…
I’m going to put more formal “musicians wanted” in some other places (various local forums, maybe Craigslist), but if you’re reading this and you want to play, hit the contact page and let me know…
Also, if this band does go beyond the gig to become a full-fledged Tacoma institution (ha!), I’m thinking we need a good band name. Something with a bit of whimsy, a bit of power, and definitely something uniquely Tacoma. The name “Museum of Brass” has been floating around my head, but I’m still not sure I’m happy with it. Ideas in the comments, please!

Spiffy New Façade for Primo Grill
· Posted Tuesday September 18, 2007 by jamie
I’m taking a day off from work today to get some projects done around the house, so I popped down to the barber on Sixth Ave to get my head shorn this morning. And what do I see but a brand-spankin’-new awning is being installed above the windows at Primo Grill. Kind of some fun, vibrant colors to brighten up that little block of Pine Street.
A quick email exchange with Charlie informed me that they will be adding more awnings to cover the remainder of the windows that border the restaurant. I’m guessing the current cocktail-lounge-style neon sign will be coming down, given the difference in color scheme, but I could be wrong. (Update: It appears that they’re leaving up the existing sign with the new awnings, but the colors actually work okay together.) Still waiting to hear back on whether sidewalk dining might be in the cards…
We moved into the neighborhood when Primo was very new (and just about the only nice restaurant, unless you count Lorenzo’s), so it’s been fun to see it’s continued success even as Sixth Ave has blown up in the ensuing years. It’s great to see that, even with their new venture, Crown Bar, coming online soon (and presumably taking up a lot of their time and energy), Charlie and Jacque are dedicated to keeping Primo Grill up to the high standard they’ve set.

Sixth Avenue Streetscape Community Workshop
· Posted Thursday August 16, 2007 by jamie
I wanted to put out some word about an upcoming “streetscape design workshop” for the Sixth Avenue mixed-use center zone. The invitation was addressed to Sixth Avenue business and property owners, so it seems appropriate to post to a larger audience. This affects a myriad of design choices for the area, including green space and public art, so I believe it is important that as many interested parties as possible attend (especially given the crappy scheduling at a time when business owners may be able to attend, but most residents cannot).
From the City’s Community and Economic Development Department:
The City of Tacoma Community and Economic Development Department will be hosting a Community Workshop to discuss future streetscape design guidelines in the 6th Avenue Mixed-Use Center zone (between Sprague and Alder Streets).
Please join us as the urban planning firm of AHBL leads a discussion about streetscape design and community vision for 6th Avenue. This is your chance to provide input on topics such as signage, street trees, sustainable design, and public art.
The final document—Streetscape Funding Guidelines for 6th Avenue—will be used by City Staff to guide and prioritize streetscape projects in the future.
When: Wednesday, August 22, 2007
Time: 2:30-4:30pm
Location: Upstairs at Masa (2811 Sixth Ave)
Questions? Contact Shari Hart in the Community and Economic Development Department at 253-591-5208 or shari.hart(at)cityoftacoma(dot)org.
Note: The art garbage can pictured above? Yup, that’s the one that went missing after Art on the Ave. If you have any information regarding its whereabouts, please contact Claudia Riedener, ixia(at)harbornet(dot)com.
