Old Fords All Over Downtown...
· Posted Thursday August 10, 2006 by jamie
So, seems like every time I look out the window at the office this week, there’s been old cars driving by. And not just one, but groups of them. Cars from the 40s and 50s. I’m liking it. Just seems to fit the environs. Now, I know that Hot Rod-O-Rama was last weekend, but these are definitely not hot rods, just clean old cars out-and-about. And I couldn’t find anything on the calendar for the Lemay Museum. So what’s up?
I did a bit of digging (ok, really not that much), and found in a TNT article about the hot rods that apparently the Western National Meet for the Early Ford V-8 Club of America is going on this week, Monday through Friday, centered near the downtown Courtyard by Marriott and Sheraton, and with events all over downtown.
Now, I’m pretty far from being a gearhead. Anyone who knows me is fully aware that I’m not a big fan of cars, and moreover fossil fuel use. And while I appreciate a nice car, I’m at the same time I’m always a bit perplexed that no parade or street fair can occur in our town without a classic car show being part of the festivities. Yet somehow, seeing these beautiful old cars driving amidst the old buildings, it occurs to me that we may be on to something here.
Maybe Tacoma needs to (continue to) embrace classic cars as a signature thing, and make it part of the downtown experience: classic cars driving around all the time. Maybe we can make it worth the gas money by running it as a taxi service. Maybe this is something we can get the Lemay Museum on board with. I’m just tossing this out, but I think it could really be a draw if we executed it right…
The Fords will be around through August 11th, so you still have a day to check them out if you act fast. Just head downtown, and you’ll likely see a few driving around!
More info about the Early Ford V-8 Club Meet can be found here.

I saw some putting down toward Old Town on my way to work the other day. Beautiful cars.
It’d be cool to have more of a classic car presence downtown—especially if someone wanted to convert them to biodiesel or electric!
