Curb Marking for North Tacoma Storm Drains This Weekend!
· Posted Tuesday June 13, 2006 by jamie
Citizens for a Healthy Bay will be holding a curb marking event this Saturday, June 17, at 10am in North Tacoma to increase awareness of the fact that storm drains drain to nearby waterways. What a great way to get out and improve our community.
In summary:
What: CHB Storm Drain marking
When: Saturday, June 17, 10am
Where: Meet at Baltimore Park (at S 49th and Baltimore)
Why: To meet new people and raise awareness of stormwater runoff issues
Here are the details, from CHB:
As most of you may already know, The City of Tacoma (YOU!) and other Potentially Responsible Parties just invested over $100 million and years of work into cleaning up the Thea Foss Waterway along Downtown Tacoma. $100 million into ONE WATERWAY ALONE – this isn’t even considering all of the other waterways and sites like ASARCO. The scary part to all of this is: the largest threat of recontamination is us – stormwater runoff cleaning off all of our streets and washing all of that oil, soap, garbage, etc. into our local waters.
Well, this Saturday, June 17, CHB is teaming up with the City of Tacoma and the Pierce County Stream Team to curb mark close to 150 storms drains in two hours I order to educate the communities throughout Tacoma about where their storm water goes (currently close 50% of Tacoma residents don’t know). We’ll be meeting at 10:00 in the morning at Baltimore Park (on Baltimore st that runs parallel to Orchard between Orchard and Pearl, and directly south of N49th street), sending out crews from there to curb mark until noon, and then we will regroup and celebrate our work with a pizza lunch donated by Papa John’s!!!
Right now we only have a few people who have already signed up, so when I say we need your help, we could really use your help!! If you want to bring your family, or a few co-workers, or a cub/boy/girl scout troop, or some of your closest friends or show up to meet new people…we would love to have you! This activity is great for all ages and promises to be a great time and a great way to give back to your local waters.
E-mail Elly Schroeder if you are interested and able to come!
