Tacoma Streetcar Forum Recap
· Posted Friday June 9, 2006 by jamie
Went to the Tacoma Streetcar forum/open house yesterday evening (see previous post) and have to say I am impressed with the vision. The idea of connecting the neighborhoods (Downtown, Sixth Ave, Proctor, Stadium, McKinley/38th, Fern Hill, etc.) with a focus on the business districts (instead of “most direct route”) makes a lot of sense as far as building community (and easing parking needs). Vintage cars have the potential to be a big attraction.
Several people active in the local blogs, as authors or commenters, were there, as well as various people associated with the press, transit agencies, and even a company that specializes in vintage streetcar installations. All in all a great turnout!
The big consideration at this point is that this idea is really still in it’s infancy. Now is the time to really get involved in the grassroots and tell our elected officials about our interest in this project. Now is the time to express concerns (loss of right-of-way, overhead wires, etc.) that might identify some of the scenarios that should play into any feasability and cost studies.
Tacoma Streetcar is actively looking for supporters, volunteers, and even board members. Go to their website and sign up for their email list if you have even a passing interest!

Thanks for the post and for coming! We were very happy with the turnout and discussion and look forward to pushing this thing forward. We are setting up some other open house type meetings and identifying potential board members. Anyone interested?
