Tacoma's Tunnels, Part Deux
· Posted Thursday May 25, 2006 by jamie
A while back I wrote a bit about the alleged “tunnels of Tacoma”, and came across another interesting nugget worth mentioning today.
This site (which describes the secret alien complexes beneath Fort Lewis and Mount Rainier, heh) cites a 1980 Everett Herald article about a mysterious hole in a Tacoma backyard:
A strange hole in the back yard of Jim and Harriet Johnson’s home, which “devours” everything thrown into it. Cavers explored the hole and saw 3 cone-shaped stones that they could not explain. The Johnson’s built a deck over the hole and planned to sell the house, after former owners related their own experiences. The original owner told of being lowered down the hole only to have his oil lamp sucked out of his hands, while another told of filling the hole with marble and ‘all kinds of stuff’, but the hole ‘erupted’ spewing stuff all over. Another filled the hole with old tires, but the hole seemed to consume the tires, which began sinking out of site.
So there you have it, definitive proof that there are tunnels in Tacoma. (If “the, uh, Internets” say so, it must be true.)
Back in the real world, I have heard some murmerings that there were at one time caves in various hillsides throughout the city, but these were for various reasons filled in. Tips would be appreciated on this.

Some of these “tunnels” could be remnants from an old water system.
The entire hillside of “New Tacoma” was covered with pipes to get sewage out but also to move spring water around to the newly forming city. This was before New Tacoma and Old Tacoma merged. I remember reading about one spring in particular which was supposed to have medicinal properties- people would come from all around for the spring water. This spring is now buried beneath the area at 7th & Market where The Roberson Condos are now going in. I heard that the old Heidelberg brewery sits on several springs and is still hooked up to use the spring water. Anyone want to open a Tacoma Spring Water company? I know a building just for you!
