Ride of Silence

· Posted Thursday May 4, 2006 by jamie

So Derek posted about Bike To Work Month, and several of us have been semi-unsuccessfully trying to organize an informal urban bicycle ride over at Tacomaness.com. I guess cycling is in the air, and as a regular bike commuter I suppose I should do my part.

On May 17 at 7:00pm at various locations around the world, people will join in the Ride of Silence, a slow paced ride to both honor injured and killed bicyclists and raise awareness of the rights of bicyclists on public roadways.

The local ride will be sponsored by the Tacoma Wheelmen’s Bicycle Club, and will be approximately 12 miles long.

Details from the Ride of Silence website:

The ride will begin at 7PM from the parking lot behind the McDonalds near Trader Joe’s in University Place. The address is 3802 Bridgeport Way W, University Place, WA. The route will be down Bridgeport Way and through University Place with an estimated ride time of one hour.

Merge Music, a performing musicians co-op, will be participating in the ride in memory of Andy Morgan, who was struck and killed last year by a furniture delivery truck while biking to work in New York City. Andy, a great jazz guitarist and a totally nice person, was a PLU alum, where I played for a time with him in the jazz ensemble. After the ride, Merge Music will be hosting a jazz jam featuring members of the Andy Morgan Jazz Quartet at Northern Pacific Coffee Company near PLU in Parkland. More details

I encourage anyone who can make it to show up for the nice, slow ride and maybe head to the jam session as well.

  2. Will you look at that…my posts don’t include the year. This was from last year. Gotta fix that little “missing info” oversight…
