New Narrows Bridge Dedication

· Posted Monday July 16, 2007 by jamie

Yesterday morning we hopped on our bikes and headed over (via the Scott Pierson Trail) to the Grand Opening celebration for the new Narrows Bridge. What an exciting feat of engineering, and an impressive crowd to match. After locking up our bikes and setting out on foot from the base of War Memorial Park, we managed to dodge all of the screaming children and obnoxious double strollers for a walk across to Gig Harbor on the new bridge, and then we decided to make the return walk on the old bridge. We were fascinated by the fact that (as the traffic lane configuration now exists), there was more space for eastbound foot traffic than westbound. We remain disappointed that for whatever reason the new towers didn’t get painted green to complement the old bridge. And we remain skeptical about the feasibility of lighting the whole thing up. But all things said and done, it’s definitely exciting…

Here’s some photos from the event:

Many more at KevinFreitas.net: (here and here).

Also, at least for today, pretty much every picture coming across the FeedTacoma Flickr stream appears to be bridge-related…

  1. I agree on the green paint. It’s really always going to look, well… unfinished.
