An Explanation of Advertising on ThriceAllAmerican

I’m sure regular readers of ThriceAllAmerican have noticed the various additions of advertising on the site over the last month or so. Yes, it’s true, I’m selling out. But I’m hoping there are some unique opportunities here for local businesses that will make it all worth it for everyone. I’m just hoping to cover hosting and other basic operating costs. Maybe eventually get me a new set of headphones…
First things first. My initial foray into advertising was Google’s AdSense program, which puts up context-sensitive ads. This is nice because the ads at least have something to do with the page on which they are appearing. However, the downside is that people don’t tend to click them, which is how I would actually make money off of them. As a result, over the last month or so I have made a sum total of something like 2 bucks. Google won’t give me any of that until I make something more like 100 bucks. So that will happen, like, never…
Since then I have come across another service offered by Project Wonderful. They are responsible for all of the “your ad here” boxes appearing throughout the site. For my benefit, these are cost-per-day ads, meaning that if I’m displaying some cheezy ad at least I get something out of it. For the benefit of the advertisers, each ad space is essentially purchased via auction, so the laws of supply-and-demand sort of guide how much it’s going to cost. So here’s my big goal/experiment: I want as many of these ad slots as possible filled up with Tacoma area businesses, or other things of local import…perhaps candidates for local office, non-profits, other blogs, the possibilities are endless. Right now I think a few spaces are occupied by purveyors of online comics, but there’s a lot of room left and you can always outbid them. So if you have something you want to promote to an audience that is passionate about Tacoma and excited to support local businesses, I encourage you to consider advertising on ThriceAllAmerican. Well, I submitted a bid! And it only took me….all day, really. My wireless adapter keeps breaking. The actual bidding process minus all the restarting and fiddling with hardware was very simple. It should only take about 2 minutes for others.

I’m approaching this as an experiment. I’m not sure I want to advertise webcomics forever, so hopefully some of the local angles will pick up…
I can always take the ads down, after all.
