Preservation Through Education
· Posted Friday May 4, 2007 by jamie
Interesting posting at House In Progress regarding the Heritage Conservation Network. This organization apparently presents “building conservation workshops” that bring together experts in historic restoration and volunteers for hands-on historic preservation projects. The projects benefit from free labor, and the participants are able to learn restoration skills.
The mind reels at the possibilities of using the citizens of Tacoma to help restore some of our historic icons. Imagine having a hand in the restoration of the Elks Building, the Winthrop, or the Luzon. Historic Tacoma is doing some neat things, such as their May lecture series, and it’s not too much of a stretch to see them facilitating something similar to this that pulls from their membership, benefiting both our local historical heritage and providing educational opportunities to local history enthusiasts. I’m in, anyone else?

In addition to using volunteers to help restore local landmarks, it would also be great to coordinate among ourselves to assist each other when we need an extra hand for our own home projects too.
