Wilcox Farms to Start Organic Dairy Product Line

· Posted Wednesday April 18, 2007 by jamie

Organic equals good. Salmon-safe is great. Local is even better. It is pretty neat to see these things come together in one package with the new organic line of milk and eggs from Wilcox Farms in Roy. I’m still a big fan of the glass bottles from Faith Dairy, but it’s nice to have options…

Here’s a press release:

Wilcox Farms, a 1,800-acre farm in Roy, is a local family business that produces high quality dairy products for the Pacific Northwest. Since 1909, four generations have been committed to providing fresh dairy and egg products, and their commitment continues to grow.

Wilcox Farms is introducing a new product line of organic milk and eggs. The Roy farm recently met rigorous organic certification standards by receiving “Salmon-Safe” certification, an emerging
Northwest eco-label to recognize farming practices that protect the health of rivers and streams. Wilcox Farms is dedicated to making sure their practices protect water quality and habitat not only for salmon and wildlife, but also for the residents of Pierce County. They know the importance of the environment and proudly support sustainable farming practices.

Agriculture is a $94 million industry in Pierce County. The County has been making significant strides to save farmland and the farmer by carrying out and promoting efforts that improve the viability of the local agricultural industry. The efforts are paying off.

Development pressures threaten our County farmers who typically hold large pieces of land prime for development. Farms and farmland have been disappearing because the land is more valuable as something other than agriculture. The Pierce County Agriculture Strategic Plan identifies “buying local” campaigns as one answer to increase the viability of local agriculture. The County is developing the Farming, Assistance, Revitalization and Marketing (FARM) program. A part of this program markets locally grown products, linking farmers directly to local consumers.

Saving Pierce County farmland is in the best interest of the citizens and is a County priority. Farmland provides a better quality of life, more open space, and better quality food. When utilizing best management practices, farmland can provide cleaner air and high water quality. The best way to save local farms is to buy from local farmers.
