Physically Separated Bike Lanes: A Cool Concept for Tacoma

· Posted Thursday April 12, 2007 by jamie

StreetFilms, which has the tag line “Filming the New York City Streets Renaissance”, has all sorts of interesting urban design related films, especially as related to pedestrian and cycling concerns. I came across an interesting video today (via Grist.org) on the subject of physically separated bike lanes.

Putting the bike lane between the sidewalk and parking seems like a great choice for cyclist safety. I’d love to see the city look into this possibility around town.

Check out the video at StreetFilms.

Bonus: Cool video showing the scale of bicycle use in Copenhagen. Wow!

Another Bonus: Those ones too boring for you? Check out this video, some amazing New York bike messenger racing video that’s been circling the web for a few years now. Don’t try this stuff at home.

  2. It’s too bad they wouldn’t fit on St. Helens...

  3. Seems like a much safer way to manage the bike lanes. But I would be worried about thoughtless drivers slinging their driver side doors open after parking and clobbering the cyclists. After all, in that configuration, you have no where to go.
