Feelin' Daffy - 2006 Tacoma Daffodil Parade
· Posted Monday April 24, 2006 by jamie
After our breakfast on Saturday, we headed down to Pac Ave for the Tacoma leg of the Daffodil Parade. We missed last year’s parade after attending a couple of years ago on a whim, so we were determined to make it this year. It’s always fun to see the community come together for events like this, and to see people out and about in the downtown area on a weekend, lined up 2 and 3 deep all along the 10 blocks of the parade.
I’m coming in a little bit late on this, we forgot our camera, and Kevin, who we ran into at the Pacific Not-So-Square grand opening after the parade with his wife Sarah, has some great pictures to put my thousands of words to shame…but some of the highlights for me:
- The Governor: Chris Gregoire weaved from side to side along the parade route waving and shaking hands. Big props to her for coming out.
- The “Human” Cannonball: Hi-larious. It doesn’t get much better than shooting a soccerball-headed ragdoll out of a cannon.
- The bands: For me, bands are the best part of a parade, so it was great to see so many high school and middle school/junior high bands in the parade. Which brings me to…
- The Sumner High School Marching Band: Dude, these guys took it to the next level. As they passed us, they were playing a slow melodic intro to Stars and Stripes forever, with the great effect of actually playing a nice quiet legato in the middle of a parade. The intonation and balance were spot on. I actually wanted to follow them down the parade route so I could keep listening.
- The Weather: Man was it great parade weather!
